自己紹介: Hello there! My name is Nathaniel James Hayes, but that is a bit long so please call me Nat. I am from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, which is close to Vancouver. I love studying history, and I am studying Japanese Canadian History at Kobe University. This is my fourth time in Japan, and I still really enjoy learning about the culture here, travelling around, and finding delicious tonkatsu spots. I am looking forward to helping you on your English language journey!
(こんにちは！私の名前はNathaniel James Hayesです。少し長いのでNatと呼んでください。カナダのブリティッシュコロンビアのビクトリアというバンクーバーに近いところの出身です。歴史を勉強する事が好きで、神戸大学で日系カナダ人の歴史を学んでいます。日本に来るのは4回目で日本の文化を学んだり、旅行したり、美味しいトンカツ屋さんを見つけたりすることをとても楽しんでいます。あなたの英語習得への道のりの手助けができることを楽しみにしています！)
休みの日は何をしている？: Although I should be studying, on my days off, I can be found playing badminton with other people in Kobe. If I am not there, then I could also be hiking the mountains near Okamoto or enjoying some local foods. If you see me out and about, please feel free to say hello!
(休みの日は勉強しないといけないのですが、神戸で仲間とバドミントンをしていることもあります。もしそうでなければ、岡本の近くの山でハイキングをしたり地元の料理を楽しんだりしています。もし外出中に見かけたら、気兼ねなく声をかけてください！)
Teachingで気を付けていることはありますか？: When I was in grade school, I learned that teaching is a form of servant leadership; that is, teachers should try to serve their students, so that students can achieve their goals and dreams. I try to apply this way of thinking when I am teaching. I want all my students to achieve their goals, and I am happy to adapt my teaching style to make this happen. At the same time learning a language is about communication, so I try to make it easy and fun to communicate while using English.
(小学生の時に奉仕型リーダーシップ、つまり先生は生徒達の目標や夢を達成できるように尽くすべきだということを学びました。私が教えるときはこの考え方を適用しようとしています。すべての生徒達に目標を達成してほしいので、私は喜んでその実現に向けて生徒に合った教え方をします。同時に言語を学ぶということはコミュニケーションを学ぶことなので、英語を使うときにストレスなく楽しくコミュニケーションをとろうと努めています。)
最後に一言お願いします: As a fellow language learner, I know that learning a language is difficult; from high school, I have been studying Japanese on and off again. I still make many mistakes with grammars, when speaking or writing. The important thing is to keep trying and growing while on your language journey; embrace the mistakes, and soon you will be surprised at how far you’ve come. I look forward to joining you on your own language journey.
